POKOTABI / Watanabe
中華そば わたなべ
Located near Hanayashiki in Asakusa, Chukasoba Watanabe serves ago-dashi ramen, seabura-topped bowls, and handmade gyoza suited for both meals and casual drinks.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Occupying a spot on the first floor of the Hanayashiki Building in Asakusa, Chukasoba Watanabe combines the reassuring comfort of a noodle diner with the relaxed, unhurried air of a casual drinking spot. The shop is laid out with counter and table seating in an approachable setting, welcoming solo diners dropping in for a quick bowl alongside guests unwinding over small plates.
The house specialty is the ago-dashi chukasoba, centred on a gentle stock brewed from dried flying fish. Distinct seafood notes rise through the soy sauce broth, harmonising naturally with gently curly noodles and tender slices of chashu pork. Those in search of richer depth can turn to the seabura chukasoba finished with pork back fat, while diners preferring a clear, light profile can opt for the salt-seasoned shio chukasoba made with sea salt from Khánh Hòa, Vietnam. The noodle roster is bolstered further by distinctive alternatives, including tantan mazesoba coated in a soft-cooked onsen egg and brothless tsukemen scented with yuzu citrus.
While fundamentally a noodle counter, the establishment also features an extensive appetiser menu reminiscent of a neighbourhood izakaya. A lineup of dim sum dishes—from crisply seared handmade gyoza and aromatic shiso-herb gyoza to boiled dumplings and handmade shumai—provides an ideal accompaniment to an alcoholic beverage. Ordering an appetiser platter loaded with chashu pork, seasoned boiled egg, seasoned menma bamboo shoots, and bean sprouts alongside draught beer, Hoppy, or a tart baisu sour sets the stage for an authentic Tokyo shitamachi evening.
For guests seeking a solid non-noodle meal, the kitchen serves fried rice as well as set meals including ginger-fried pork and mapo tofu, making it equally practical for a hearty midday lunch. Rounding out a bowl of ramen with an accompanying side of chashu rice or raw egg over rice is an easy way to build a fuller meal. Whether for a casual drink in the middle of the afternoon or a warming bowl at the end of the day, it remains an unpretentious and dependable pit stop while exploring Asakusa.
